Shell Tellus S2 VX 46 is Shell’s ISO VG 46 high-viscosity-index anti-wear hydraulic oil, and this is the genuine 1,000 litre IBC supplied by Harlow Lubricants as an authorised Shell distributor. It is the current name for the product previously sold as Shell Tellus T 46 and Shell Tellus S2 V 46 — same grade, same approvals, now on Group II base oil.

Which equipment approvals does Shell Tellus S2 VX 46 carry?

Shell’s technical data sheet lists Tellus S2 VX 46 as designed to meet Bosch Rexroth Fluid Rating RDE 90245, Parker Denison HF-0, HF-1 and HF-2, Eaton E-FDGN-TB002-E and Fives (Cincinnati Machine) P-70, alongside ISO 11158 (HV), DIN 51524 Part 3 HVLP, ASTM D6158 (HV) and Swedish Standard SS 15 54 34 AM. It is the HV/HVLP counterpart of Tellus S2 MX 46.

What is Shell Tellus S2 VX 46 used for?

It is the grade for hydraulic systems that see wide temperature swings — excavators, cranes, agricultural and forestry machines, and mobile plant working outdoors through a full year, or in the heat of Lagos, Accra and Johannesburg. The viscosity-index improver keeps the oil thin enough at cold start and thick enough at operating temperature.

For stationary industrial hydraulics at a steady temperature, the standard Tellus S2 MX 46 is the usual specification; Shell recommends VX only where the temperature range justifies it.

Is Shell Tellus S2 VX 46 the same as Shell Tellus T 46?

Yes — Shell renamed Tellus T 46 to Tellus S2 V 46 and then to Tellus S2 VX 46 when the range moved to Group II base oil; it is the same ISO VG 46 high-viscosity-index HVLP grade, and it can be used to top up a system already running the older name.

Do not confuse it with Tellus S2 MX 46 (standard HLP) or Tellus S2 VA 46 (ashless HV). We will check the grade you ask for against your equipment before we quote.

What are the equivalents to Shell Tellus S2 VX 46?

If you are consolidating brands across a site, the like-for-like ISO VG 46 anti-wear oils we stock are Mobil DTE 10 Excel 46 and Castrol Hyspin HVI 46. All meet DIN 51524 Part 3 HVLP; check the OEM approval you need before switching, and never mix mineral hydraulic oil with fire-resistant or environmentally acceptable fluids.

The same oil is available as a 20 litre pail for top-ups and in 209 litre drums on request; the IBC is the lowest cost per litre for fleets and plant hire yards using several hundred litres a month.
