Insulating oil is only as good as the condition it arrives in, so every drum is genuine, manufacturer-sealed stock supplied with its data sheet and certificate of conformity. For tendered work we can provide distributor authorisation documentation alongside the quote — send the specification with your enquiry and we will check it against the current data sheet before quoting.
Transformer oil is the mineral insulating oil that fills oil-immersed transformers, switchgear and tap changers, where it does two jobs at once: it insulates the windings electrically and carries heat away from the core. Harlow Lubricants Supplies is an authorised distributor for Shell, Texaco and Aztec, with 35 years of lubricant supply behind us, and we stock inhibited and uninhibited transformer oils in 20 L pails, 205/208/209 L drums and bulk delivery for sites across the UK and export to Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.
Need a quote, a data sheet or a certificate of conformity? Tell us the grade, pack size and delivery address and we reply with stock and lead time. For tendered work we can supply distributor authorisation documentation alongside the quote.
What is transformer oil and what does it actually do?
Transformer oil is a highly refined mineral oil with very low electrical conductivity, used as the insulating and cooling medium inside oil-filled electrical equipment. Most transformer oils in use across the UK grid are naphthenic base oils, chosen because they stay fluid at low temperatures and dissolve oxidation by-products rather than depositing them as sludge.
Inside a transformer the oil performs three functions. It provides dielectric insulation between windings and the tank. It conducts heat from the core out to the radiators, which is what allows a transformer to carry its rated load. And it acts as a diagnostic medium — dissolved gas analysis of a sampled oil tells an engineer what is happening inside a sealed unit without opening it.
Because the oil is doing insulating work, contamination matters far more than it does in a lubricant. Water, fibres and particulate all reduce breakdown voltage sharply, which is why transformer oil is handled, stored and delivered differently from ordinary industrial oils.
Which standard should transformer oil meet — IEC 60296?
The governing specification for unused mineral insulating oils in the UK and Europe is IEC 60296, which covers oils for transformers and switchgear and sets limits for breakdown voltage, water content, acidity, oxidation stability and a range of physical properties. The equivalent North American specification is ASTM D3487, and some OEM and utility specifications add their own requirements on top.
Two test methods come up constantly in procurement documents. Breakdown voltage is measured to IEC 60156 and is the headline dielectric figure. Oxidation stability is measured to IEC 61125 and determines how long the oil will last in service before acidity and sludge become a problem.
If your specification quotes a standard, send it with your enquiry. We will confirm against the manufacturer data sheet before quoting rather than after.
What is the difference between inhibited and uninhibited transformer oil?
Uninhibited transformer oil relies only on the natural oxidation resistance of the refined base oil. Inhibited oil has a synthetic antioxidant added — typically DBPC — which is consumed over time and substantially extends the oil’s service life before oxidation products form.
Most UK utility and OEM specifications now call for inhibited oil, and inhibited grades account for the clear majority of UK consumption by volume. Uninhibited oil is still specified for some applications and for topping up existing uninhibited fills.
The two should not be casually mixed. If you are topping up an existing transformer, match what is already in the tank, or have the combination assessed before you do it. We stock both types, so tell us which your specification calls for.
Which transformer oils do you stock?
Our current transformer and switchgear oil range covers both inhibited and uninhibited grades:
Shell Diala S4 ZX-I — a gas-to-liquid inhibited insulating oil, available in 20 L, 209 L drums and bulk delivery. The GTL base gives very high oxidation stability and excellent low-temperature performance.
Texaco Transformer Oil Uninhibited — a conventional uninhibited naphthenic insulating oil in 208 L drums, for specifications that call for an uninhibited fill.
Aztec Manutec Electrate ECO-U — an uninhibited transformer oil in 205 L drums.
If you need a grade we do not list — a specific Nynas, Shell or TotalEnergies product, or a synthetic ester such as MIDEL for fire-safety applications — ask. Our range is broader than the products shown here and we source to specification.
What pack sizes can I buy — drums or bulk?
Transformer oil is normally supplied in 205, 208 or 209 litre drums depending on the manufacturer’s fill, with 20 litre pails available for top-up and small maintenance work. For transformer filling, re-filling after a refurbishment, or programmed replacement across multiple substations, bulk road tanker delivery is usually the better option on both cost and handling.
Tell us the volume and the number of delivery points and we will quote the format that makes sense rather than defaulting to drums.
Can I buy transformer oil for a tendered or framework contract?
Yes. Utility and infrastructure tenders for transformer oil commonly require the supplier to be the manufacturer or their authorised dealer or distributor, and ask for evidence of prior supply at volume. Harlow Lubricants Supplies has been trading for 35 years and holds authorised distributor status with the brands we carry, so we can supply the authorisation documentation and references that pre-qualification questionnaires ask for.
Send the specification and the PQQ requirements with your enquiry and we will respond with the documentation, not just a price.
How much does transformer oil cost?
We do not publish prices, because transformer oil pricing moves with base oil markets and depends heavily on grade, volume, pack format and delivery location — a single drum to one address and a tanker load across several substations are very different commercial propositions. Send us the grade, quantity and destination and you will get a current price with stock and lead time against it.
Do you deliver transformer oil to Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa?
Yes. We export across West and East Africa and to South Africa, and grid modernisation and substation projects are a significant part of that trade. Export orders are supplied with the documentation the destination requires, and we will confirm packaging and shipping arrangements before the order is placed. Tell us the port or site and the volume, and we will come back with a landed position.
