Which equipment approvals does Shell Tellus S2 MX 68 carry?

Shell’s technical data sheet lists Tellus S2 MX 68 as designed to meet Bosch Rexroth Fluid Rating RDE 90245, Parker Denison HF-0, HF-1 and HF-2, Eaton E-FDGN-TB002-E and Fives (Cincinnati Machine) P-69, alongside ISO 11158 (HM), DIN 51524 Part 2 HLP, ASTM D6158-05 and Swedish Standard SS 15 54 34 AM. If your pump manual names one of those, this is the oil it is asking for.

What is Shell Tellus S2 MX 68 used for?

ISO VG 68 is the thicker industrial grade for hot ambient temperatures and heavily loaded pumps — mining and quarry plant, presses running hot, and sites in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa where ISO 46 thins out too far in the afternoon heat. Where the machine manual specifies ISO 46, use the S2 MX 46 instead.

Shell recommends the high-viscosity-index Tellus S2 VX 68 where equipment sees wide temperature swings, such as mobile plant working outdoors through a full year. The Shell data sheet also lists MX 68 as suitable for marine hydraulic systems where an ISO HM fluid is specified.

Is Shell Tellus S2 MX 68 the same as Shell Tellus 68?

Yes — Shell renamed Tellus 68 to Tellus S2 M 68 and then to Tellus S2 MX 68 when the range moved to Group II base oil; it is the same ISO VG 68 HLP grade with the same OEM approvals, and it can be used to top up a system already running the older name.

Do not confuse it with Tellus S2 MA 68 (ashless, zinc-free) or Tellus S2 VX 68 (high viscosity index). We will check the grade you ask for against your equipment before we quote.

What are the equivalents to Shell Tellus S2 MX 68?

The same oil is available in 20 litre pails and as a 1,000 litre IBC on request — ask on the quote; the drum works out cheaper per litre than pails once a site uses more than about 200 litres a month.
