Which equipment approvals does Shell Tellus S2 MX 46 carry?

Shell’s technical data sheet lists Tellus S2 MX 46 as designed to meet Bosch Rexroth Fluid Rating RDE 90245, Parker Denison HF-0, HF-1 and HF-2, Eaton E-FDGN-TB002-E and Fives (Cincinnati Machine) P-70, alongside ISO 11158 (HM), DIN 51524 Part 2 HLP, ASTM D6158-05 and Swedish Standard SS 15 54 34 AM. If your pump or press manual names one of those, this is the oil it is asking for.

What is Shell Tellus S2 MX 46 used for?

It is the standard choice for stationary industrial hydraulics — presses, injection moulding machines, machine tools and power-pack systems — and for many mobile hydraulic applications where the ambient temperature is fairly steady. Shell recommends Tellus S2 VX 46 instead where equipment sees wide temperature swings, such as excavators and cranes working outdoors through a full year.

The Shell data sheet also lists it as suitable for marine hydraulic systems where an ISO HM fluid is specified.

Is Shell Tellus S2 MX 46 the same as Shell Tellus 46?

Yes — Shell renamed Tellus 46 to Tellus S2 M 46 and then to Tellus S2 MX 46 when the product moved to Group II base oil; it is the same ISO VG 46 HLP grade with the same OEM approvals. If your maintenance schedule still says “Tellus 46”, this is the current product, and it can be used to top up a system already running the older name.

Do not confuse it with Tellus S2 MA 46 (ashless, zinc-free) or Tellus S2 VX 46 (high viscosity index). We will check the grade you ask for against your equipment before we quote.

What are the Mobil, Castrol and Fuchs equivalents to Tellus S2 MX 46?

If you are consolidating brands across a site, the like-for-like ISO VG 46 anti-wear oils we stock are Mobil DTE 25 Ultra, Castrol Hyspin AWS 46 and Fuchs Renolin ZAF 46B. All meet DIN 51524-2 HLP; check the OEM approval you need before switching, and never mix mineral hydraulic oil with fire-resistant or environmentally acceptable fluids.
