Which equipment approvals does Shell Omala S2 GX 220 carry?

Shell lists Omala S2 GX 220 as meeting ISO 12925-1 Type CKD and CKC, DIN 51517 Part 3 CLP, ANSI/AGMA 9005-F16, AIST (US Steel) 224 and Fives Cincinnati P-74, and as approved by Siemens AG for Flender helical, bevel, planetary and marine gear units under Flender T 7300. The predecessor Omala S2 G 220 data sheet carries the same Cincinnati P-74, AGMA 9005-EO2, ISO 12925-1 CKD and DIN 51517-3 CLP claims.

What is Shell Omala S2 GX 220 used for?

Shell specifies Omala S2 GX for enclosed industrial gear systems using steel-on-steel spur, helical or planetary gears — heavy-duty gearboxes in splash or forced-circulation systems — and for non-geared components such as bearings in circulating systems. The S2 G 220 data sheet quotes bulk oil temperatures up to 100 °C in certain applications.

For highly loaded worm drives Shell recommends the PAG-based Omala S4 WE 220, and for very long oil life or wide temperature swings the PAO-based Omala S4 GXV 220. For automotive hypoid gears use the Shell Spirax range instead.

Is Shell Omala S2 GX 220 the same as Omala S2 G 220 or Omala 220?

Yes — Shell Omala S2 GX 220 is the current name; its predecessor was Omala S2 G 220, which itself was previously sold as Shell Omala 220. Same ISO VG 220 EP mineral gear oil to DIN 51517-3 CLP, with micropitting performance and the Flender approval added in the GX generation. An old schedule that says “Omala 220” means Omala S2 GX 220 today.

Do not confuse it with Omala S4 WE 220 (PAG synthetic — not miscible with mineral oil), Omala S4 GXV 220 (PAO synthetic) or Omala S3 GP 220 (heavy-duty variant). We will check the grade and approval on the gearbox plate before we quote.

What are the equivalents to Shell Omala S2 GX 220?

If you are consolidating brands across a site, the like-for-like ISO VG 220 products we stock are Mobilgear 600 XP 220, Castrol Alpha SP 220 and Fuchs Renolin CLP 220. All meet DIN 51517-3 CLP; check the OEM approval you need before switching, and never mix mineral oils with PAG synthetics or fire-resistant fluids.
